Karen Walker’s campaign superstar: Toast

If you think that the word ‘toast’ only refers to the browned slice of bread eaten with butter and jam, you are a way too food driven.

Toast is also the name of the super Insta-famous dog star. With over than 378000 followers, (here’s Toast’s official profile), the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is well known for her iconic lolling tongue.

As an animal lover, the New Zealand fashion designer Karen Walker, immediately felt in love with the furry celebrity, shooting Toast as a model for her eyewear Spring summer 2015 campaign. Walker declared: “We were after a model for this campaign who could fit with our caramel-y colour palette and also someone whose hair would work with our three wind machines hitting her from every angle to create a slightly ’70s vibe”, and clearly Toast was the perfect match. With the ears flopped on the wind, shot by the photographer Tom Schirmacher, the Cavalier King Spaniel modelled five new styles of sunglasses, characterized by two tone of colours and bold design with the typical golden arrow along the side.

The designer admitted that being photographed next to Toast was a bit intimidating. “It’s pretty hard to compete with a toothless dog with its tongue hanging out,” she said, especially considering the fact that Toast is an experienced model.

Due to the troubled background of the puppy (she was living in cruel conditions and in 2011 was rescued by her parents from a Brooklyn puppy mill and lost her teeth because of improper care) Karen Walker also decided to make a generous donation to the committee against inhumane breeding practices in puppy mills, Friends of Finn.
